Moreover, this herb contains caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, rosmarinic acid, ellagic acid, and a flavonoid called routine, all with beneficial health effects. As consumed in small amounts, sage provides only minuscule amounts of carbohydrate calories, protein, and fiber


Salvia contains more than 160 different polyphenols, which are chemical compounds of plant origin that act as antioxidants in the body. Chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, rosmarinic acid, ellagic acid, and rutin, found in sage are related to major health benefits, including improving brain function and memory. A study by the Institute of Health USA, drink 1 cup (240 ml) infusion of salvia twice daily significantly increases the antioxidant defenses. Also lowers cholesterol, both total and HDL ( "good") and LDL ( "bad").


Improving oral health

Sage has antimicrobial effects that can neutralize some of the germs that cause dental plaque. A study of the NCBI concluded that a mouthwash based salvia effectively kills the bacteria Streptococcus mutants and the fungus Candida albicans, causantea of dental caries. For this reason, many kinds of toothpaste include sage in its composition. Sage can relieve throat infections, dental abscesses, infected gums, and mouth ulcers.

The name Salvia derives from the Latin word salvere, meaning "cure".
